Developing Social Skills in Secondary School

This course will equip school staff to understand and support pupils with social communication difficulties and limited social awareness, including autism, Down Syndrome and speech and language difficulties in mainstream secondary settings.

Outcome:

  • To develop an understanding of the difficulties with social awareness faced by pupils with social communication difficulties and autism in the teenage years.

  • To develop an understanding of how Theory of Mind impacts upon the ability to process social information accurately.

  • To improve your resource bank of teaching strategies, classroom resources and online tools across the curriculum.

  • To develop a brief understanding of interventions and tools to support pupils in developing social awareness, including social groups, Social Stories(TM) and comic strip conversations.
